Missile system plan an illusion: Russia

“Missile defense is an illusion – no matter how much money you invest in it. We will never permit creation of a system which breaks the strategic balance,” Rogozin said on Friday.

Speaking during a visit to a military industrial corporation near Moscow, Rogozin also said that no nation would be allowed to build a missile defense shield to receive unilateral “impression of impunity.”

Meanwhile, a day earlier a top Russian military official announced that Russia was developing a weapon that would immobilize the elements of a missile defense system without devastating it.

Nikolay Makarov, the chief of the Russian General Staff Gen, also stressed that Moscow should retaliate if its concerns about the deployment of the AMD elements near to the Russian border are not taken into consideration.

Russia and NATO have failed to achieve any agreement over the anti-missile program since they decided to develop a joint European missile shield system in November 2010.

Moscow has repeatedly objected to the deployment of the missile defense facilities near its borders, saying the Russian capital is the main reason for the US-led move.

However, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Friday that the planned NATO missile shield system in Europe could not be a threat to Russia’s security and invited Moscow to participate in the project.
