More Easter road deaths likely: Qld police

One person has died on Queensland’s roads over the Easter holiday period and police expect more to follow.

A woman died after her motorcycle and a car collided on the Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road at Birnam, west of the Gold Coast, about 10.50am on Sunday.

She died at the scene but no one else was seriously injured.

Police Minister David Gibson said traffic police were bracing for more serious accidents when people returned home from holidays.

“Experience has shown us that the most dangerous time on the roads is when people start their trip home,” Mr Gibson said in a statement. “Fatigue is often a factor – after fitting in lots of holiday activities, too many people are getting behind the wheel tired, and pushing on when they should be taking a break.”

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson on Sunday afternoon said police had caught 238 drink drivers, six under the influence of drugs and 156 people not wearing seatbelts.

“It is always disappointing to see people drink driving, speeding, and failing to wear seatbelts over the holidays,” Mr Atkinson said in a statement.

“These are all major contributors to road trauma.”

The national Easter road toll stands at eight.
