THE silver BMW involved in the execution-style murder of a man at a Brisbane shopping centre was in the car park for up to 30 minutes, police have revealed.

The victim, a 22-year-old Eight Mile Plains man, arrived at the Warrigal Rd shopping centre just before 6.40pm yesterday to meet friends for dinner.

Police believe the BMW a 1991 model two-door coupe – arrived about 10 minutes later.

At some point, the victim walked out to the car, where he was shot in the head.

“Timing in relation to this crime is very important,” Detective Superintendent Mick Niland said today.

“It was at approximately 6.50pm a silver BMW coupe was seen to enter that shopping centre.

“We believe that it may be linked to this crime and it was seen to arrive at that time and then it departed at approximately 7.20pm.”

Police received a Triple-0 call at 7.27pm from a person reporting a shooting in the car park.

Anyone with information on the man’s death is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Earlier, The Courier-Mail reported that the owner of the Brisbane sushi restaurant where a 22-year-old man was shot had told how the victim went outside to take a phone call minutes before he was gunned down.

The 22-year-old Asian man was shot in the head at Eight Mile Plains shopping centre, in Brisbane’s south, about 7.15pm last night.

He died around 1.50am this morning in Princess Alexandra Hospital, police say.

Sushi Train owner Naoki Yamamoto told The Courier-Mail today the young man had been sitting in the front of his restaurant with two friends just before 7.15pm.

He said the shooting victim had not been eating, but his two male friends were.

“He took a phone call and went outside and that seems to be when it happened,” Mr Yamamoto said.

“I didn’t see it happen. I only saw the ambulance come.”

Sushi Train chef Tom, who did not want to give his surname, said Thursday was one of the restaurant’s  busiest days.

“I didn’t see what happened,” he said.

“I heard about it from my manager.”

The shooting came less than 24 hours after 56-year-old father of two John Lazzaro was gunned down in his loungeroom at nearby Rochedale South on Wednesday night.

Detective Superintendent Michael Niland says there are no apparent links at this stage.

“We’ll look at all angles but at this stage there are no connections,” he told ABC Radio.

A large segment of the car park where the 22-year-old man was shot last night remained cordoned off by police tape this morning.

Around 40 cars were left in the car park overnight while police scoured the scene for evidence.

At least seven people have been able to pick up their cars and drive them home or to work this morning.

Other motorists may have to wait until later today to retrieve their vehicles because they remain cordoned off near the murder scene.

Stunned shoppers and business owners came to look at the crime scene this morning, expressing shock and dismay.

Nearby neighbour Kerrin Miller, whose home backs in to the car park where the young man was shot, said it was terrifying.

“I was out the back having a cigarette when I saw all the police cars and thought it had to do with the shooting at Rochedale,” he said.

“it’s awful. The kind of thing that would happen in America, not Australia.”

Bakery owner Jessica told ABC Radio such crimes weren’t common in the area.

“We are all pretty shocked and amazed this morning,” she said.

Police were interviewing a number of witnesses and are not allowing people to take their vehicles from the carpark until crime scene investigations are completed.

Detectives from the homicide squad and state crime operation command, as well as Mount Gravatt criminal investigation branch, are investigating, with a major incident room established at the Mount Gravatt Police Complex.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area around the time.

Ambulance officers say they transported the man and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A 24-year-old worker rushed to the aid of the shot man.

“Someone I knew came running into my store because he knew I was a trainee nurse. I ran up with a first-aid kit and saw a man’s body lying on the ground face down,” he told The Courier-Mail late last night.

“Someone handed me a phone where emergency service people gave me instructions.

“I put the man on his side and they told me to try and stop the bleeding but I couldn’t see where he was bleeding from. He had long black hair which was caught up in all the blood over his face. He was breathing but not responsive.

“He looked like a young fit healthy guy.”

There was chaos at the Warrigal Square Shopping Centre as up to 200 late night shoppers were forbidden by police from returning to their vehicles in the carpark.

“My waiter was the witness to the shooting. He says a silver two-door BMW drove up and shot the young Asian man who had been eating at the sushi restaurant,” said the owner of Little Nyonya Singapore Restaurant.

“He saw the silver BMW drive up and shoot him and drive away. There was blood all over his face. Then he called Triple 0 and he hung up and they called him back two minutes later and they asked him to check on the guy.

“He heard the one single gunshot and saw the blood on his face. There was a huge pool of blood on the ground. There was also a trolley boy standing by.”

Hairdresser Takuro Nishikawa, who works at Glams Hair Lounge, was working tonight less than 100 metres from where the 22-year-old man was shot.

“I was in the salon and didn’t hear anything over the music. But I turned around when I saw flashing lights and people were crowding around,” said the 27-year-old who had worked at the Eight Mile Plains salon for a year.

“I am totally shocked and now I just want to get into my car I cannot.”

Police were at the scene of the incident where a crime scene had been quickly declared at the location and a major incident room has been established at Mount Gravatt Police Station.

Police Detective Superintendent Mick Niland said: “It’s in the very early stages of the investigation. We are searching for offenders and we are seeking the assistance of the public. We are speaking with witnesses in relation to this matter.

“The shot man has come to the shopping centre to have dinner with friends. The friends are speaking with police.”
