Morsi to be executed if sentence final: Justice Minister

Mohamed Morsi in death penalty organe suit_EGyptAll death sentences handed down to Muslim Brotherhood members will be applied after the entire judicial process ends, he said.

“I swear to God, I’d leave my position immediately [if sentences were not applied.] Egypt is not afraid, and mark my words, and if otherwise happened say whatever about me… I swear to God Morsi and else and everyone with a final sentence will meet his fair fate,” Zend added.

In May 2015, Cairo Criminal Court sentenced Mohamed Morsi, Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie and four other members of the outlawed group to death over a major 2011 jailbreak, where the former president was detained pending investigations.

Many Islamists and convicts escaped from prison on Jan. 29, 2011, including members of Gaza’s Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

In June 2015, the court upheld the penalty after receiving the unbinding opinion of Egypt’s Grand Mufti on the death sentences. The sentence received wide-scale condemnation on the international level. The sentence is not final and can be appealed.

Thus far, only one Islamist has been executed since the 2013 ouster of Morsi; he was charged with throwing teens of a rooftop in Alexandria.
