Google X Project (GXP) has decided to file a patent and get into the toy making business with interactive stuffed animals that respond to voice commands using speech, expressions and actions.

Richard Wayne DeVaul, director of rapid evaluation and “mad science” at GXP has created these cuddly toys for tots that could integrate into smart home technology.

These rabbits and teddy bears are taking children’s interactive toys to the next level with a toy that could “open its eyes, lift its head and/or focus its gaze on the user.”

Other possibilities are for the creation of interactive dragons or aliens.

The patent explained that the toys had to appear “cute” and should encourage even the youngest members of the family to interact with it.

These mimicking expressions are meant to convey interest in the child. Other body language capabilities include:

• Uncomfortable scratching
• Furrowed brows

The intuitive controls of these robotic stuffed animals make it easier for children to engage in the toy.

Google said of their patent application for these interactive rabbits and teddy bears: “We file patent applications on a variety of ideas that our employees come up with. Some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don’t. Prospective product announcements should not necessarily be inferred from our patent applications.”

The patent was actually filed in 2012 and has only recently been made public.

The idea is that the toy would communicate with its own servers; and as well as PCs, smart TVs and home entertainment systems.

The toys include:

• Microphones
• Speakers
• Cameras
• Motors
• Wireless connection to the internet

The user can activate the toy using a “trigger word” which would cause the rabbit or teddy bear to “wake up and turn their gaze toward the person, addressing them” while making sure to maintain eye contact.

DeVaul explained: “To express interest, an anthropomorphic device may open its eyes, lift its head and/or focus its gaze on the user.”

Concerning privacy rights, Jens-Henrik Jeppesen, director of European Affairs for the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) said : “In general, as technology moves forward, markets will offer a steady stream of products that push or even break mainstream social norms – on privacy as well as other things. Responsible companies will understand they need to provide full transparency about how such devices handle data. Some consumers may find such products appealing – I suspect most will not.”
