The Education Minister Nick McKim says the latest NAPLAN results for Tasmanian students are disappointing.

The preliminary report into the 2011 National Assessment Program show scores fell in nine areas during the past 12 months.

Year fives went backwards in reading, spelling and grammar and punctuation.

Year seven students also scored down in reading, spelling and numeracy but year threes improved in spelling, numeracy and grammar and punctuation.

While year nines showed improvement in reading and spelling, almost a quarter are below the national average in writing.

Mr McKim says the results don’t meet expectations.

“Clearly these results don’t meet expectations. They don’t meet my expectations,” he said.

“However I know how hard our parents and our school leaders are working.”

Leanne Wright from the Education Union has played down the figures.

“There is not a great difference between what has happened in previous years” she said.

“It would be possible to overreact to some of the differences that have occured this year.”

The Opposition has warned the budget cuts will only make matters worse.
