Nearly 400 arrested over Moscow riot

Six Russian riot police officers were also reported injured during the Sunday night violence on the southern Moscow suburb of Biryulyovo, local media reports said on Monday.

This is while 1,000 police officers and a number of helicopters were dispatched to Biryulyovo Sunday afternoon as the protest rally turned violent and angry crowds began attacking police lines and local businesses.

The development came nearly a week after the young Russian male was reportedly knifed to death by a suspected non-Russian individual.

Russian Health Ministry authorities put the number of detained rioters at 380, adding that 23 others sought medical help as a result of the disturbances.

“Bottles and stones were flying from all sides, people were prepared,” said a Russian police lieutenant colonel injured during the confrontation, as quoted in local press reports.

Additionally, several small stores were damaged during the violence, and images broadcast by the local media displayed overturned cars surrounded by smashed watermelons.

Other press images of the violence showed a group of protesters chanting nationalist slogans and breaking into a shop while smashing glass and setting off smoke bombs.

According to authorities, nearly 1,000 people participated in the late night protest, including local residents, football fans and nationalist activists.

Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev reportedly called a snap meeting shortly after the violence broke out and appeared on national television to order police forces not to make any informal arrangements with criminals that incited the violence.

He also initiated Plan Volcano 5, a contingency arrangement that put Moscow’s entire police force on alert to deal with mass unrest, said a local press report. The plan, in use for the first time since terrorist attacks on the Moscow subway in 2010, was cancelled early Monday morning as the violence appeared to subside.
