No Tulisa, this WASN’T a victory for girl power

Victory: Singer Tulisa won a High Court battle against an ex-boyfriend who released footage of a sex tape they had recorded together

When Tulisa appeared on the steps of the Royal Courts of Justice wearing a megawatt smile and a minuscule pair of shorts, it was — she assured us — to celebrate the ultimate victory for girl power.

The 23-year-old singer and TV star had just won an admission of guilt and a grovelling apology from her former boyfriend, who had posted a tape of her performing a sex act on him on the internet in a doomed bid to make money.

Hand on hip and with newly-dyed blonde hair, Tulisa’s advice to young girls who might find themselves in her position was: ‘Take it and use it as an experience to make you stronger, and don’t let anyone ruin you as a person inside.’ In other words, don’t get mad, get even.

Well, how about ‘don’t do it at all’?

For what has never been in doubt is that Tulisa agreed to be filmed in a pornographic style in the first place. While that in no way excuses the disgusting and reprehensible way her boyfriend exploited the results, it does, alas, make her naive and foolish in the extreme.

What a golden opportunity it would have been, therefore, for the star to send a strong message to young girls everywhere that in our digital world, it is reckless and dangerous to allow yourself to be filmed by a boyfriend in any kind of intimate pose.

Or, worse still, to film it yourself. ‘Sexting’, or sending explicit photos of yourself to boyfriends, has become so pernicious that the Child Exploitation And Online Protection Centre says  38 per cent of 11 to 17-year-olds have received them by text or email.

Young girls are bullied by boyfriends into taking and sending pictures of themselves — which are then often passed around to their friends and beyond. And, as Tulisa discovered, once the images are out there, there is no control over who sees them, and no getting them back.

Naive: Young girls in the throes of first relationships believe they can trust their boyfriends totally

Naive: Young girls in the throes of first relationships believe they can trust their boyfriends totally

Far too often, girls in the throes of a teenage passion believe they can trust their boyfriend completely. And far too often, they have paid the price with their dignity.

Those intimate images may not be used for financial gain, as Tulisa’s were. But they do have potential to cause immense hurt, distress and embarrassment. And most humiliated girls don’t have Tulisa’s wealth to take a low-life boyfriend to court, nor a PR team to help clean up her image.

Isn’t that the true lesson of this case?

Instead of claiming it as a victory for girl power, Tulisa could have empowered girls to do the one thing that will protect them from such appalling exploitation. To just say no.

Who couldn’t love the pictures of the Rolling Stones celebrating 50 years since their first gig? More wrinkles than a Shar-pei puppy farm, yet they seemed years younger than their total age of 272. Proof it’s not always a healthy lifestyle that keeps you youthful at heart. Pilates and vitamin pills be damned, I’ll raise a glass to that.

Rather a distant relationship

The death of Tetra Pak billionairess Eva Rausing remains a mystery, with husband Hans held on suspicion of murder. But Eva’s mother believes she may have died from the stress of travelling from America in a bid to persuade Hans to join her in rehab.

Nancy Kemeny claims the flying put an unbearable strain on her daughter’s already damaged heart and says the family had done all they could to rescue her from her demons. Mrs Kemeny last saw Eva briefly at Christmas. Since then they had exchanged one brief text message.

However tragic the circumstances, a curious kind of devotion.

A show trial is sham justice

The family of Michaela McAreavey were understandably devastated when the two men accused of murdering her on honeymoon with husband John in Mauritius were found not guilty.

The eight-month trial foundered under accusations of police brutality and incompetence, and claims confessions were beaten out of the accused.

Authorities were desperate to get a quick conviction to limit the damage to  the island’s lucrative  tourist trade.

Yes, the verdict must be a blow. But surely those who loved Michaela would not have wanted the tragedy of her death to be deepened by an unjust conviction.

Kate and William are upset that an Australian magazine published pictures of them walking hand-in-hand on the beach in their swimsuits on honeymoon. The snaps quickly hit the internet and they are indeed revealing — showing a brick-hard six-pack that even Becks could be proud of. And that was just Kate’s tum.

The NHS has no excuses this time

Neglect, incompetence and downright cruelty. That’s what marked the final hours of 22-year-old Kane Gorny as he lay dying in hospital from dehydration.

The litany of failings that led to his death would shame a third world hospital. His case is a reminder that such incidents, though thankfully rare, are still taking place on NHS wards.

‘Don’t worry,’ the nurses told his mother. ‘He’s in good hands — we’ll look after him.’ Instead, the young man was so desperate for a drink of water, he phoned 999. But even police were unable to shock the complacent and negligent staff into providing this most basic need.

That failing cannot be blamed on Tory budget cuts: NHS funding has trebled in a decade.

But it can be blamed on the character of some of the people who now work in what was once a proud, caring profession.

Getting athletes and sports fans into the country and keeping people safe are surely the two most important priorities for the Olympic organisers. Yet queues at passport control are up to two hours long, and now we learn we will have 18-year-old A-level students manning security checkpoints. Lord Coe did a fine job getting the Olympic infrastructure ready on target. How tragic if our hapless Home Secretary Theresa May has turned that success into national humiliation.

Pouting plays a part

Scarlett Johansson is too sexy for her own good.  Not my view, but hers. She claims her voluptuous curves and Monroe-style pout limit the film roles she is offered. Really? Luscious lips, a gorgeous figure and little talent don’t seem to have limited the career of Angelina Jolie (right).

In an attempt  to rescue his tarnished image, the Duke of York is to abseil down the Shard, Europe’s tallest building. After all those foreign banquets he’s indulged in, I do hope the glass is reinforced.

A jealous boyfriend has admitted squirting brown sauce at his girlfriend when she wouldn’t stop reading the SM book Fifty Shades Of Grey. Shouldn’t he have used whipped cream?

Westminster Noticeboard

The leader of the Tory Lords Reform rebels, Jesse Norman, was accused by an agitated David Cameron of not being ‘honourable’. That’s like being accused of dishonesty by Jeffrey Archer.

Ed Miliband says he has no idea about the family’s finances and can’t remember the last time he did the shopping. His wife is better at that, he says. And they accuse Cameron of patronising women!

MPs have headed off on their 47-day holiday, and will return for just two weeks before another break, not resitting again until October 15. Before they left, they voted through more ‘family friendly’ hours so they will not sit past 7.30pm on any day except Monday. Remember that next time you hear an MP boast their party’s ‘working night and day’ to get the economy back on track.

Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman wants to add 10 per cent to all our home insurance premiums to cover the cost of flood damage and save the Government having to fork out. Let’s hope she has as much success as she did in her attempt to sell off our forests.

It did look odd Tulisa claiming some sort of victory for having willingly agreed to be the subject of a tawdry sex film. Is that what girls have to do now to keep their boyfriends? Girl power – what a joke.

You should read the Guardian for a good laugh – the bedwetters there are all hailing her as a feminist icon and good example for teenage girls. Of course they want to destroy the private and meaningful relationships we know work and replace them with casual sex and fatherless children who vote for socialists. Still it’s funny to watch them tie themselves in knots hailing a woman being humiliated in this way as a victory for feminism.

Tulisa’s hair looks really brassy now, I liked it much better when it was dark.

Sadly its not just the young and naive that make these tapes or ‘sext’ its also the grown up and stupid. I introduced two friends of mine to each other as i thought they would get on. Cue- nothing but constant harassment from the female about what the male was doing and me finding out from other male friends that my girlfriend had been sending photos of her bits to my male friend, which he was then distributing amongst his other friends. What to do? I told them both they were better off apart and never mentioned the pictures to either of them. I now have left them both to it. I have wondered whether to tell my female friend about what he’s done with the pictures, but quite frankly, after the way he was treating her in other ways, to send him pics like that was just asking for trouble. I was receiving near on 50 texts a day from her about him so I couldn’t bear to get involved in something like this. I wonder whats gong on with them now…

Don’t know why I bother reading her articles as they alway makes me SO angry! Last week referring to providing IVF on the NHS as ‘pandering to the unfortunate’ and now this week acting as if Tulisa’s done something hugely wrong. Two people in a loving relationship often end up experimenting with pictures/videos to spice things up and there’s nothing wrong with that. When you’re in love with someone you don’t see it ever ending and certainly don’t ever expect them to ever betray you in such a way.

Re Kane Gorny, surely the staff should have had a wake up call when the police contacted them.I hope heads roll !

18 year old = legally an adult, can vote and be killed in Afghanistan.
A level student = proof the person can at least read and write and has enough sense to try and get an education instead of benefits.
Wait for the proof that they are incapable of doing the job instead of knocking them ahead of time.

Because obviously this Amanda woman is perfect.

What makes me laugh is when there was a article about men being trapped into pregnancies , after trusting their partner was on the pill , the comment box was hardly sympathetic , saying “if you don’t want a baby , wrap it up”, but as soon as women are portrayed as the victims of distrust , everyone seems react a whole lot differently , you dont see comments blaming the girls for not taking the responsibility to say “no I don’t want to film it”, everyone automatically jumps on the innocent little princess bandwagon ,

What a sexist article , how some of you journalists haven’t been sacked is beyond me , but then again sexism only counts when women are the victims doesn’t it !. “girls are bullied into it by their boyfriends”, what is it with women like you who seem to think ALL women are victims , if this country was TRULY EQUAL like the feminists claimed to want , there would be none of these sexist articles and you wouldn’t have a Job
