Celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson has apologised for his ‘stupid and irresponsible behaviour’ and letting his family down after being caught stealing cheese and wine from a Tesco store.

The star of Ready Steady Cook, 60, was caught shoplifting five times in 16 days at a store in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

Apologising, Worrall Thompson said he was ‘devastated’ and that he would get ‘clearly needed’ treatment following the thefts.

He has also publicly said sorry to Tesco and staff at the Henley branch in Oxfordshire for the thefts.

Worrall Thompson was filmed on the store’s secret camera using the self-service checkout machines.

He failed to scan the barcodes of some items and sneaked them into a bag before trying to walk out.

Security guards are then said to have stopped father-of-four Worrall Thompson and checked his bags before calling police.

Worrall Thompson said: ‘I am so sorry for all my recent stupid and irresponsible actions; I
am of course devastated for my family and friends, whom I’ve let down
and will seek the treatment that is clearly needed.

‘I am not the first,
and I certainly won’t be the last person to do something without rhyme
or reason – what went through my head, only time will tell.

‘Of course, I must also apologise sincerely to Tesco, with whom I’m had a
long and genuine working relationship, and to all the staff at the
Henley branch, many of whom I’ve got to know over the years.

‘Once again, I am so sorry and hopefully in the future I can make amends.’

The stolen goods were ‘relatively low value’ and included bottles of wine and cheese.

A source said: ‘He was ordering blocks of cheese at the deli counter, taking bottles of wine, then putting some things through the scanner but walking out with the rest.’

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star was arrested on suspicion of theft and cautioned.

The chef – whose full name is Henry Antony Cardew Worrall Thompson – has suffered as the downturn hit his businesses.

In 2009 the gourmand was forced to shut the doors of four of his restaurants.

He laid off some 60 staff after Lloyds Banking Group refused to extend his overdraft.

As a result, his company AWT Restaurants was sent spiralling into administration.

Two years ago he was also forced to quit his £1.6million mansion in Henley-on-Thames for a home in High Wycombe.

AWT currently consists of a country pub called The Greyhound, two grill restaurants in Kew and Windsor, and a delicatessen café, the Windsor Larder.

Worrall Thompson was educated at the King’s School, Canterbury, and is the godson of actor Richard Burton.

He is married to Jacinta, his third wife, and has two children. He has a line of branded cookery utensils and gravy mixtures, and is a patron of Forest, the pro-smoking lobby.

He also fundraises for the Conservative Party.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: ‘We arrested a man from High Wycombe following a report of shoplifting offences.

‘The man has been issued with a formal caution for these offences.’

I bet he accepted a caution … this shows that some people are above the law .. this should go to court and he should be fined..( the police are not doing their job)

I say get rid off those infernal scanners and give the checkout operators their jobs back, so we can deal with human beings instead of more talking machines!

I always use the check-out facility thats got an attended point (the ones with the ques) if a mistakes made with regards to billing as its always the shops fault.
These self billing checkout points are fraught with problems, particularly if you are in a hurry.

I live in inner city Manchester and have witnessed the police arresting women and children who look as if they don’t have two beans to rub together, for stealing very basic food and sweets. We have never all been in it together.

His business has been badly affected by the recession.
I would presume it,s also been affected by the smoking ban.
How much deeper is this country going to sink?
Hospitality venues must be allowed to actually provide hospitality to ALL it,s customers.

I dont know what the courts are like in manchester but in london even knife crime
doesnt involve a custodial sentence anymore. In fact i am not suprised the police even bothered to turn up, such is their Apathy.

I’ve made mistakes with the self service but have always gone back into the store to rectify them after noticing. If it were any normal person then they’d have been arrested from the off.
That said though, my local Co-Op must have the most lax security as I witnessed a man stealing cheese and honey and all they said when I reported him was that they didn’t have the staff available to chase after him. He was then seen knocking door to door trying to sell the things he’d stolen to people.

What amazes me most about this story is that he’s managed to find three women to marry him.

I don’t think there’s anything “to be fair” about it!!….not one person can have that much trouble with self service tills..I’ve never had a problem with them. Everyone is having to make sacrifices at the moment, doesn’t matter who you are

Every little helps
