Now You Can Track Your Facebook Friends Sleeping Habits

Søren Louv-Jansen, a software developer from Denmark, has created a source code tool in order to track the sleep patterns of his friends on Facebook.

Using activity timestamp data provided by the social media platform, which is stored on its site and accessible via a messenger app, Jansen was able to determine friend’s sleep habits of frequent users.

Jansen explained to the media that his software checked the Facebook activity database every 10 minutes. He created a graphics chart to show the sleep patterns of his friends; showing that regular sleep patterns were used during the work week, and nocturnal habits became erratic during the weekend.

Facebook allegedly asked Jansen to “discourage others from using his software [because] it violates the site’s terms of service”; however an estimated 100 people have downloaded the tool and the developer refuses to take it down.

Jansen explained: “My point was not to spy on my friends. I want people to be aware that they’re leaving some digital footsteps everywhere they go.”

The developer went on to point out: “Everybody I’ve shown this to have been equally fascinated and outraged by the accuracy with which it predicts their sleep habits. In this digital world we leave footprints where we go, and when we do it, without even thinking about it. Facebook might block this little ‘hack,’ so your friends no longer can track you, but Facebook will always be able to do their own data analysis which is undoubtedly way better than what I’ve come up with. They are likely using this data for profiling, and creating more user-specific ads.”

Jansen is not saying “Facebook is evil”, but he is showing how “this is a side effect of what they’re doing” and concerned users “should be aware whatever they do, they’re not alone, someone is always watching.”
