Npower confirms 1,460 jobs to go in UK

The energy giant said in a statement on Thursday that the proposals would mean “customers would continue to be served on the phone by people based in UK call centres and back office functions would be outsourced to India.”

The statement further noted that Tata Consultancy Services will take on back office work, such as checking meter readings against customers’ bills.

Npower, one of the UK’s “big six” gas and electricity suppliers and owned by Germany’s RWE company, added that the redundancies would take place over the next eight months, and that the plans would mean the closure of offices in the western city of Stoke-on-Trent, affecting around 550 employees.

An office in the town of Oldbury will also be shut with the loss of 400 staff, while 430 employees at Rainton Bridge business park in the northeastern city of Sunderland and another 80 in the city of Leeds are also facing the axe. Staff at some other sites will be asked to relocate.

Npower chief executive Paul Massara said while the changes would be “incredibly hard” for the employees”, they were necessary “to deliver the levels of service our customers deserve.”

Britain’s trade unions have, however, accused Npower of serving up a “Christmas nightmare” by announcing plans to move back office jobs to India and transfer hundreds of frontline call center jobs to the British outsourcer Capita.

Britain’s biggest trade union, Unison, said the decision would backfire on Npower.

“There is no consideration of what this will do to the UK or to the local economy in the worst hit areas. The West Midlands and North West have the highest rates of unemployment in the country and losing another 1460 jobs will do more damage to struggling local businesses and services,” Unison national officer, Matt Lay, said.

He added, “These so-called savings will backfire on the company which has consistently let its customers and staff down by not investing enough in the workforce, technology or in the latest customer service techniques.”
