NSW man charged over grooming claim

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in southern NSW after allegedly grooming a 14-year-old girl online.

An investigation was launched into the man after police were told that he was talking to a 14-year-old girl on a social networking site, before allegedly inviting her to meet him.

An undercover detective from the Child Exploitation Internet Unit then posed as a 14-year-old girl and held a number of online conversations with the man during May, June and early July, police said.

Police allege the conversations were sexually explicit and that plans were made for the “teen” and the man to meet.

At about 3.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday a 38-year-old man was arrested after detectives stopped a car at Towrang, near Goulburn.

A search warrant was also conducted at a home in Goulburn where a number of items were seized for forensic examination.

The Goulburn man was charged with using a carriage service to procure a person under 16; two counts of using a carriage service to transmit indecent communication to a person under 16; and being a disqualified driver.

The man was refused bail and is scheduled to appear at Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday.
