Number of US mosques soars in decade

According to a new study the number of mosques in the United States has increased by 74 percent jumping from 1,209 in the beginning of the millennium to more than 2,100 in 2010

“The steady number of converts that come to Islam is not a spectacular rate but it is a steady rate and converts compose a significant percentage of the Muslim community,” said Ihsan Bagby co-author of the study and associate professor of Islamic studies at the University of Kentucky, pointing out to one of the reasons for the increase in US mosques.

The study on the growth of mosques shows that Muslims have integrated into American society although they feared being ‘marginalized, demonized and isolated’ after 9/11, according to Safaa Zarzour, secretary general of the Islamic Society.

The survey, sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, shows that most of the growth from mosques has been in cities. It is, however, not limited to urban environments. There has been 28 percent mosque growth in suburban areas in recent years compared to 16 percent in 2000.

New York has the highest number of mosques, at 257, with California close behind at 246. Texas follows behind with 166 mosques.

In 2000 the northeast of America was the region with the most mosques, — a decade later, now the South of America has the highest number of mosques.

Experts consider the growing number of mosques to be proof that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States.
