Obama & Netanyahu Beef Up Israeli – US Arms Deals: Kosher?

nsnbc : Following the first meeting between U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington on Monday, the two positioned themselves as opponents in some regards, while striking a deal that prolongs the United States’ unequivocal support of Israel.

Obama_Netanyahu_USA_Nov 2015Netanyahu’s visit to the White House aimed, among other at the size of the new 10-year military aid package to Israel, a country that itself is among of the world’s leading arms exporters. Regardless, a recent Congressional Report reveals that Israel has received $124.3bn in military assistance from the US since its founding.

Neglecting the current Israeli crackdown against an ever more desperate Palestinian population under military occupation as well as disputes over the United States’ endorsement of the P5+1 & Iran deal on Iran’s nuclear energy program and sanctions, Netanyahu would tout that “Israel has shouldered a tremendous defense burden over the recent years”.

Obama, for his part, played down the size of the $ 30 billion aid that was guaranteed under the George W. Bush administration and the fact that the new package will exceed that sum. The size of the new “aid package” is thought to include weapons systems Israel may obtain under the so-called memorandum of understanding. There are, however, still thought to be discussions about Israeli requests to increase the overall size of the existing $30bn commitment from around $3bn to around $4.5bn a year.

Obama would refer to the recent eruption of violence in the occupied Palestinian territories, mainly by prioritizing that “Israel is his number one foreign policy priority” while Obama expressed “his solidarity” with Israel in the face of the current violence that has cost some four Israeli and dozens of Palestinian’s lives.

Obama would stress that he condemns “the Palestinian violence in the strongest terms” while he omitted the illegal Israeli military occupation of Palestinian territories and of the Syrian Golan Heights.

Israel_Defense_ExportIsrael itself ranks among the world’s top exporters of weapons. In 2012, Israeli defense exports skyrocketed to a record of $7.47 billion, making it the world’s sixth-largest exporter of arms. The 30% increase in global arms sales, compared with 2011 levels, positions Israel’s total weapons exports, behind the U.S., U.K., Russia, China and Germany and ahead of France and Italy.

Israel has also been one of the mainstay suppliers of weapons for insurgents who are fighting the Syrian Arab Army. Some of the arms exports are funneled via Lebanese middlemen. In September 2011, nsnbc published a covertly recorded audio tape with former Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, implicating Hariri in exporting Israeli weapons to terrorist organizations in Syria. Israel is currently providing the Al-Qaeda associated Jabhat Al-Nusrah and other insurgents with direct military support, logistic and intelligence support via the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
