Occupy Wall Street and Occupy the Fed: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Washington’s Blog
October 9, 2011

The Occupy Wall Street protests are obviously targeting Wall Street, i.e. the giant banks.

The Occupy the Fed protests – led by Alex Jones, the Oathkeepers and other conservatives – are targeting the Federal Reserve. *

While some are trying to weaken these two movements through a divide-and-conquer strategy, the truth is that they are two sides of the same coin.

Specifically, the corrupt, giant banks would never have gotten so big and powerful on their own. In a free market, the leaner banks with sounder business models would be growing, while the giants who made reckless speculative gambles would have gone bust. See this, this and this.

It is the Federal Reserve, Treasury and Congress who have repeatedly bailed out the big banks, ensured they make money at taxpayer expense, exempted them from standard accounting and the criminal and fraud laws which govern the little guy, and encouraged them – through “moral hazard” – of becoming even more reckless.

Indeed, the government made them big in the first place. As I noted in 2009:

As MIT economics professor and former IMF chief economist Simon Johnson points out today, the official White House position is that:

(1) The government created the mega-giants, and they are not the product of free market competition

***

(3) Giant banks are good for the economy

And given that the 12 Federal Reserve banks are private – see this and this – the giant banks have a huge amount of influence on what the Fed does. Indeed, the money-center banks in New York control the New York Fed, the most powerful Fed bank. Indeed, Jamie Dimon – the head of JP Morgan Chase – is a Director of the New York Fed.

Any attempt by the left to say that the free market is all bad and the government is all good is naive and counter-productive.

And any attempt by the right to say that we should leave the giant banks alone because that’s the free market are wrong.

The Federal Reserve and the giant banks are part of a single malignant, symbiotic relationship. Conservatives and liberals should unite in breaking up both.

* This is an over-simplification. In reality, many conservatives and people who would like to end the Fed are part of the Wall Street protests … and reining in the Fed is one of the central platforms of Occupy Wall Street.

  1. The system boys are attacking in all ways but the people understand the BS And the people will win. We must toss off the little and big Tyranny of evil doers.

  2. I find it interesting that if you mention Ron Paul or ending the FED you are banned from the chat for being a 1%er….. this is communist bullshit nothing more.

In NH paid agitators started this. Thank god there are only 20 people.

  3. Maybe if these corrupt animals were ” FORCED INTO HIDING” THEY WOULD THINK TWICE….

  4. Ever heard of A.L.E.C. ?

Its the American Legislative Exchange Council.

Recall how the big oil execs form big oil corporations pulled their chairs up alongside Cheney to go over those oil fields in Iraq and helped to do some legislating? Well corporations do that more often than you know. Corporations pull their chairs right up alongside the legislators and help to determine draft your futures.

There’s nothing fundamentally wrong with the core insurance business units of American International Group Inc. (AIG). Nothing at all. What imploded the venerable insurance giant was an accumulation of misplaced bets on credit default swaps.

By the best estimates of the International Swaps and Derivatives Association and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), often referred to as the central banks’ central bank, the notional value of credit default swaps out in the market place is some $62 trillion, or 35 trillion British Pounds at an exchange rate of $1.78.

A credit default swap (CDS) is akin to an insurance policy. It’s a financial derivative that a debt holder can use to hedge against the default by a debtor corporation or a sovereign entity. But a CDS can also be used to speculate.

A subsidiary of AIG wrote insurance in the form of credit default swaps, meaning it offered buyers insurance protection against losses on debts and loans of borrowers, to the tune of $447 billion. But the mix was toxic. They also sold insurance on esoteric asset-backed security pools – securities like collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), pools of subprime mortgages, pools of Alt-A mortgages, prime mortgage pools and collateralized loan obligations. The subsidiary collected a lot of premium income and its earnings were robust.

When the housing market collapsed, imploding home prices resulted in precipitously rising foreclosures. The mortgage pools AIG insured began to fall in value. Additionally, the credit crisis began to take its toll on leveraged loans and it saw mounting losses on the loan pools it had insured. In 2007, the company was starting to feel serious heat.

From its humble beginnings in China in 1919 – through the 40-year tenure of CEO Maurice R. “Hank” Greenberg, which ended ignominiously for Greenberg in 2006 – AIG grew aggressively. Greenberg grew and diversified the insurance giant, ultimately amassing a trillion-dollar balance sheet.

    But not everything was Kosher.

In an effort to assuage analysts and maintain leverage, the firm entered into sham transactions to affect the appearance on its balance sheet of $500 million of loan-loss reserves, which analysts had been questioning as formerly declining. The result was a 2006 Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement action, a $1.6 billion settlement and the removal of Greenberg. Greenberg is still fighting civil charges related to his actions at the firm”.

  8. Best headline I ever saw so far. Unite all 99% against common enemy – private Fed.

  9. And it is not enough for me to say that. AGAIN- Alex, thank you. Thank you for all the hours you put in. For someone to trust. For a voice we can believe in. Every day.

    THANK YOU ALEX JONES

You are like the best friend I never knew.

  10. Not to diminish Alex, he has done more for the truth movement than anyone. And on a personal level, I wish to say-

Alex, thank you for your dedication. I love you bro.

  11. Ok, front and center. Firstly, I have been listening to Alex for years, and he is a funny guy. But I was informed when he was jacking off to the Sears catalog. Secondly, the movement is doing great, and gaining steam. Quit bitching and moaning like children and get real. Grow the fuck up now or you’ll be turned over to

“Uncle Gabe”- and you don’t want that.

This is relatively simple. Stop bitching about Alex, step over him, and let’s get this going. Right or wrong, together nothing can stop us.

Alex means well. And he is doing what is in his power. But it is time to bypass and get jiggy.

  12. The Nazis had it all figuered out and fought the banksters to the last drop.

“Germany’s unforgivable crime before the second world war,” Churchill said,” was her attempt to extricate her economic power from the world’s trading system and to create her own exchange mechanism which would deny world finance its opportunity to profit.” (Churchill to Lord Robert Boothby, quoted in the Foreword, 2nd Ed. Sydney Rogerson, ‘Propaganda in the Next War’ 2001, orig. 1938.

      • around here there’s not much confusion when it comes to the federal reserve , the fed is 100% terrorists, and needs to disappear

        • its not even the fed it is the owners of the fed that have the governments around the world by the balls, this is why it is a global movement, stay foccused, stay together, differences of all kinds are to be put on hold.
          lets do this.

    • Fightback,

      You are right.

  14. Cow Palace Hosts First Ever Medical Marijuana Job Fair
    October 8, 2011 11:14 AM

DALY CITY (KCBS)— Even though the federal government threatened a crack down on California’s medical marijuana clubs this week, The Cow Palace is brazenly hosting a Cannabis Expo that includes a job fair just south of San Francisco.

Medical marijuana growers and sellers gathered this weekend with no sign of the feds in sight at the West Coast Cannabis Expo. However, an array of aromas emitting from medicinal marijuanas and their budding entrepreneurs was prevalent as they displayed their wares, almost like a wine-tasting.

At a time when many Americans are looking for any job they can get, medical marijuana is still proving to be a growing industry. Eager applicants showed up as the cannabis fair doubled as the first-ever medical marijuana job fair.

    Larry described his citrus-scented cannabis.

“It’s grapefruit. It smells exactly like a grapefruit, right? It’s got a really good nose, really strong grapefruit flavor,” Larry said.

Larry runs the Oaksterdam Bakery in Oakland. He gets 10 job applications a day and he doesn’t even have any openings right now.

“This industry is growing and it’s going to continue to grow. A lot of good things are going to happen for a lot of people,” Larry commented.

In the job fair section of the expo, Bob Calkin, CEO of CannaJobs, and of the Cannabis Career Institute, said this field is awash in, so-called green jobs.

“Most of the people coming to the classes are retired people or people from another line of work, or business that have either crashed like the real-estate market or some other thing they’re leaving and they want to try something new,” Calkin said.

The cannabis crowd remains skeptical that the government will really shut down one of the fastest-growing sectors of the California economy.

    • were just gonna keep bulldozing are way to freedom.. what Larry needs is a privet army
which will protect him from the nwo swat teams.

      • I think you meant “private”. Be at peace. Put your will into it, your mind, your heart. Everything will happen.

  15. It’s the banks, it’s the FED, it’s this and that… It is the F’ng GOVERNMENT that enacts the laws the enables these crooks to do their dirtywork. The government could put them all out of business on Monday but they won’t because most of our so-called elected representatives are bought and paid for. That is the real problem…

    • And guess who keeps re-electing these clowns?

  16. Couldn’t agree more with this article. . . Bickering over what target is actually the last line of defense the elite have; and I find it suspect that Alex Jones played so wondefully into that gambit. The fact of the matter is the entire scheme is like a giant earth worm, cutting off a bit here and there, won’t work. You need to go after all the targets of the big scheme: Wall Street, the bailed out banks, the Fed, Washington, Pentagon, C.I.A, AIPAC, Mosanto foods, Halliburton, Goldman Sachs, etc.

    • I find you suspect, “Helix”. As in “Helix productions”. wellaware1.com

  17. Doth both sides of that coin read military coup welcome to tyranny?

Like every place online the truth is being buried. Did you know that Sarah Palin is a spy used to catch a large organization attempting to overthrow the U.S.? This organization includes the main stream media which is why the truth is being suppressed. The media has been forced to cooperate with an on going “investigation” into this organization.

In layman’s terms Obama was turned after the election into a spokesperson for the Pentagon who staged a coup and will not give up control of the country to the next freely elected president. If you want to live in a democracy, read and SHARE this story. Search PalinsDirtyLittleSecret.blogspot before it’s too late.

    • And you really think that changing your online name is going to make us believe your nonsense? Try again…….
