Openings, testimony Tuesday at Peterson trial

CHICAGO (AP) — Opening statements at Drew Peterson‘s trial Tuesday pit a dry but dogged prosecutor against a flamboyant defense attorney.

Peterson has pleaded not guilty to murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio. The ex-cop was only charged after his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared.

Will County’s State’s Attorney James Glasgow may face the bigger challenge.

The burden of proof is always on prosecutors, but a botched initial investigation into Savio’s death left them with scant physical evidence.

The elephant in the courtroom will be Stacy Peterson.

The judge has said jurors can’t be told she’s presumed dead or that Peterson may have been responsible for her disappearance. Brodsky says that means attorneys may have to use awkward terminology referring to her.
