Opium almost doubles death risk

Iranian scientists reviewed data of more than 50,000 adults living in the country’s northeastern Golestan Province to find possible links between opium and higher death risk.

About 20 million people worldwide use opium or its derivatives. Some studies have linked opium to conditions such as throat cancer, bladder cancer and coronary heart disease but less research has been done about negative effects of low-dose opium use.

Dr. Reza Malekzadeh and his international colleagues found that opium use was tied to an 86 percent higher risk for all-cause mortality especially circulatory diseases, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis and cancer.

The study also disclosed that the risk of death associated with opium use was even more among women.

“These results are consistent with results of previous case-control studies in humans and animal studies suggesting deleterious health consequences of exogenous opioids such as morphine,” said co-author Dr. Farin Kamangar of Morgan State University, US.

The new findings which appeared in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), not only highlight the tolls of opium addiction but also raise questions about the risks of long term prescription opioid drugs for treatment of chronic pain.

“In high income countries doctors rarely, if ever, encounter someone who uses opium,” said Dr. Irfan Dhalla of St. Michael’s Hospital in Canada.

“However, millions of patients with chronic non-cancer pain are prescribed opioids, such as morphine, codeine, oxycodone, and hydromorphone.”
