Pakistan to have new prime minister by end of week

“Zardari has to move fast,” he said. “Things can’t remain like
this for long.”

The government’s supporters have accused the Supreme Court of pursuing a
political agenda and mounting a “soft coup” by barring Mr Gilani
from office.

He refused to bow to an order to reopen a corruption investigation into
President Zardari and was convicted of contempt of court in April, leading
to his disqualification this week.

Mr Shahabuddin is believed to be Mr Zardari’s choice. He served as finance
minister under Mr Zardari’s late wife Benazir Bhutto.

However, he has been dogged by allegations that he was caught up in a scam
during his time as health minister, when ephedrine intended for export found
its way into local markets where it can be used in the manufacture of
illicit drugs. He denies any wrongdoing.

“It has been decided and an announcement will come soon,” said a
senior figure in the Pakistan People’s Party.

The new leader will face a series of major challenges.

Pakistan has been gripped by violent protests at frequent power cuts that
leave many people without electricity for up to 18 hours a day.

He will be also be asked by the Supreme Court to write to Swiss authorities
asking them to investigate President Zardari’s finances – the very issue
that brought down his predecessor.
