Pakistanis rally to condemn US bounty

Thousands of people poured into the streets across Pakistan on Friday in mass demos called by the Defense Council of Pakistan, an alliance of right-wing and religious groups, in a number of cities.

The largest turnout was in the eastern city of Lahore while similar rallies were also held in Islamabad, the neighboring garrison city of Rawalpindi, Karachi in the south and in the central shrine city of Multan as well as Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-administered Kashmir.

The protesters shouted slogans in condemnation of the bounty the United States has slapped on Hafiz Saeed, the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba group.

They set fire to US flags and demanded Washington to apologize for the decision. They vowed to continue their protests until the bounty is removed.

The demonstrators also urged the cancellation of a Sunday visit to India by President Asif Ali Zardari, the first Pakistani head of state to travel to the neighboring country since 2005.

The Pakistani-based Lashkar-e-Taiba is believed to have launched the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, which left some 160 people dead.

The reward for Saeed was announced by US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman on Monday in India.

Saeed, who lives openly in Pakistan, has scoffed at the charges and called a press conference to say he is ready to face “any American court.”
