Phone hacking inquiry head to retire

Akers, who is in charge of inquiries into phone hacking, police corruption, and computer crime, has said she would retire after the 2012 London Olympics.

“Deputy Assistant Commissioner (DAC) Sue Akers is due to retire later this year after 36 years service with the MPS. The DAC signalled her intention to retire this autumn when she took charge of investigations into phone-hacking and related corruption and computer crime,” said a Scotland Yard spokesperson.

Akers is in charge of Operation Weeting, a British police investigation into the phone hacking scandal, Operation Elveden, an investigation into inappropriate payments to police, and Operation Tuleta, an investigation into computer hacking allegations.

Investigations into the phone hacking scandal were conducted from 2005 to 2007 when one ‘rogue’ reporter, Clive Goodman who was the royal editor at Rupert Murdoch’s now-defunct News of the World, was blamed.

However, after further allegations were made by The Guardian in 2009 and again in 2011, former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson and Assistant Commissioner John Yates resigned over links to the scandal.

Speaking about Akers’ departure, Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey said, “Considerable resources have been dedicated to investigating phone-hacking and related offences.”
