What is phonon in simple words?
A phonon is a definite discrete unit or quantum of vibrational mechanical energy, just as a photon is a quantum of electromagnetic or light energy.
Phonons can be thought of as quantized sound waves, similar to photons as quantized light waves.
The transport mediated by these excitations, termed phonons, which are the discrete units of energy associated with the normal modes of vibration, are largely responsible for thermal conductivity and heat capacity in semiconductors and insulators.
This means that these vibrations of the lattice can emit or absorb light. This is the reason they are called “optical” phonons.

What wavelength are phonons?
Intriguingly, both near-infrared optical photons and gigahertz phonons have a wavelength of about 1 μm. This results from the 5 orders of magnitude difference in the speed of light relative to the speed of sound.
