Premature babies may have increased risk of psychosis

New Scientist – More premature babies are surviving than ever before, but it may come at a cost: an increased risk of mental health problems when they grow up. Around 8 per cent of babies are born before 37 weeks, and 1.5 per cent born before 32 weeks. Although modern medicine means that many of these premature babies now survive, recent studies have shown differences in their brain structure compared with babies born after 37 weeks, as well as an increased risk of emotional and behavioural problems in childhood. Now it seems they are also at greater risk of a broad range of psychiatric conditions, including bipolar disorder, psychosis and depression in adulthood. Read article
