President Trump’s First 100 Days in the White House Not a Success

As President Trump nears the end of his first 100 days in office, it can be concluded that no amazing success is apparent.

Major themes of Trump’s campaign were “Repeal Obamacare!” and “Build a wall!” Neither has occurred. His bill to repeal and replace President Obama’s Affordable Health Care Act was withdrawn before Congress could vote on it because of insufficient support from his Republican Party to ensure the bill’s passage. There is talk that the bill is being rewritten and will soon be submitted to congress in its revised form—but not before the first 100 days are over.

The wall on the U.S.-Mexican border, to be paid for by Mexico, seems to be a no-go for the first 100 days. Mexico has repeatedly said it would not pay for the wall. However, bids are being solicited for the wall’s construction and Trump has included funds in his budget to finance the project. He says the funds are a “down payment” and that Mexico will pay for the wall in one way or another. Funding for the wall is opposed by both Democrats and Republicans. Talk is that Trump is willing to forego funding the wall in the current budget and will revisit the issue in the fall. There is also talk that the “wall” will actually be “border security”—towers, manpower, and technology. Again, none of this will be accomplished during Trump’s first 100 days in office.

Trump’s immigration plan (“Muslim Ban”) is stalled in the courts because of its infringement on religious freedom. It was written, blocked by the courts, rewritten, and blocked again.

On October 22, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Trump released his “Contract with the American Voter”, a 100-day action plan to “Make America Great Again”. The plan included 38 specific promises – writers for the Associated Press counted them – and only 10 have been accomplished. Associated Press writers counted those, too. Those 10 were accomplished mainly through executive orders. Of the 10 that require Congress to act, none have been achieved. Nothing has been done to implement 15 of the 100-day promises, some of which are college affordability, infrastructure incentives, and punishment for companies that move jobs overseas.

One major promise made and kept resulted in Senate confirmation of Neil Gorsuch as Supreme Court justice. However, Jeff Shesol, author of books about former Presidents and former speechwriter for one, has said the confirmation achievement really belongs to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Shesol concludes, “…To have gotten so little done while having Republican majorities in both houses of Congress is a terrible indictment” against President Trump.
