nsnbc : Amidst calls for the isolation of “terrorism sponsor Qatar”, the Pentagon revealed that Doha is set to buy F-15 fighter jets worth a whopping $12 billion from the United States of America.
The – in the eyes of many observers surprising or controversial – deal was signed on Wednesday after a visit to Washington by Qatar’s Minister of State for Defense, Khalid Al-Attiya. The contract reportedly involves the delivery of 36 jets. Last year there was talk of Qatar buying 72 F-15 Strike Eagle jets for $21 billion.
The Boeing-build F-15 fighters will “give Qatar a state of the art capability and increase security cooperation and interoperability between the United States and Qatar,” the US Department of Defense said.
Of course 36 jets are less than 72 but …The deal arguably throws a spanner in the wheel of the US foreign policy buggy that was headed to isolate Qatar over its support of Muslim Brotherhood linked terrorist organizations.
Some would also note that Qatar, if isolated beyond reason, could have chosen to spend its petrodollars on Iranian jets and that would, after all, not serve the interests of the USA or its GCC neighbors.
Is U.S. foreign policy really confused? Would some ask. While others might note that putting pressure on Qatar before concluding the defense deal was everything but confused negotiations strategy. The media and historians will have to wait 25, 50, or 75 years before documents in archives can help understand the reason behind the in many people’s eyes unreasonable.
It should also be noted that Qatar is the home to the largest US air base in the region. Speaking about “reasonable”, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani commented: “I think the United States as the super power country in the world should be more thoughtful when they support measures like this. They are our ally and our friends and we expect from our friends to be fair – not to help us, but to be fair.”
