Qld finances appalling – Newman

Queensland has a level of debt that could take a pile of $100 notes into space, says Premier Campbell Newman.

The newly elected Queensland premier received a standing ovation at his address at the federal Liberal Party council in Melbourne.

Federal president Alan Stockdale introduced Mr Newman by saying if he were a racehorse, everybody in the room would be willing to put their house on him.

Mr Newman outlined the successes and challenges of the new government after 97 days in office.

This included inheriting a $100 billion debt from Labor and an over-allocated public service.

‘Labor has left us with an appalling financial position,’ he told council delegates on Saturday.

‘If you think about that (debt) takes a pile of $100 notes … all the way into space, 120km high.’

Mr Newman said Labor had employed 20,000 more public servants than taxpayers could afford to pay, leaving the state government with tough economic decisions to make.

He also highlighted the state government’s commitment to revitalise tourism and protect the environment, especially the Great Barrier Reef.
