Racism rampant across UK Met Police

According to figures compiled by the Black Police Association a total of 42 claims were made by police officers and staff against colleagues in the financial year 2011-12, compared with 16 in 2006-07, British media reported.

The Association warned that racism was a growing issue in the force and that it had failed to tackle the problem in recent years.

“The increase reflects the growing confidence of our staff in reporting internal matters that we deal with through our misconduct proceedings. These do not arise from public complaints but from staff feeling sufficiently confident to report these issues themselves”, said Met Commander Peter Spindler.

This is while that, complaints of racism against police by the public have fallen over the same period.

A total of 444 allegations of racist behavior were made by members of the public against Met employees in 2011-12, a rise on figures from a decade earlier but well down from the 750 allegations made in 2008-09.

Of the 42 internal allegations made in 2011-12, investigations into 31 cases are ongoing, seven were found to be unsubstantiated, three were substantiated and one resulted in retirement or resignation.

Superintendent Leroy Logan, of the Black Police Association, said the figures were no surprise.

“Racism within the Met is clearly a growing, serious issue… The Met needs to get a grip, which it has failed to do over the last few years,” he said, although he added that Met Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe had recognized the problem.
