Reebok to launch sensor-sticker fitness tracker

Health and fitness tracking sensor devices are a booming market, but the latest trend hopes to replace the slew of wearable wristbands and pocket devices with thin, ultra-light, adhesive sensor stickers.

Cambridge, Massuchusetts-based MC10 and Reebok are currently working together on a new device that features a smart sensing sticker developed by MC10. The added bonus of the new technology is that unlike wearable devices like wristbands or chest straps, the ultra-thin sensors can twist and stretch. While details on the Reebok device are currently scant, Mobihealthnews reports fitness buff can get their hands on the new gadget later this year.

MC10 is also developing a sensor called the Biostamp, which according to the company, can be used in a number of applications, such as a location and activity tracking device for kids, a tattoo-like sticker for diabetics to help detect hypoglycemia, or a first aid triage patch that can determine vital signs.

“If you think about how data is collected from the body, it’s by using clunky straps and boxy equipment,” MC10 CEO David Icke stated at an event last week. “MC10 is focused on advancing that so it’s seamless, thin, invisible to the user and scalable for large scale manufacturing.”

At CES this year, BodyMedia also introduced a prototype of another disposable fitness tracking patch that you can wear for up to one week. Designed to stick on your triceps, the device tracks key lifestyle indicators, such as calorie burn, steps taken, activity levels, and sleep patterns through multiple sensors that collect more than 5,000 data points per minute, stated the company. Afterward, download the data and throw the patch away.
