TWO 30th birthday celebrations at the same Lebanese restaurant turned to bloodshed when diners from both parties started fighting, attacking each other with the venue’s wooden decorations.

The riot squad was called in to break up the brawl, which began inside Tony’s Family Restaurant at Dulwich Hill on Saturday night before spilling on to the footpath.

At the height of the brawl, up to 20 patrons from two different groups ripped wooden decorations and support beams from the restaurant’s bar and began using them as weapons.

A number of bottles and glasses were also used as weapons and smashed during the altercation.

Police said both groups involved in the fight were at the restaurant celebrating separate 30th birthdays, and did not know each other prior to that.

Restaurant owner Tony Delias said he had no idea what caused the fight other than “simmering tensions”. “We kept right out of it and just called the police,” Mr Delias said.

He said it was the first time in more than 20 years of business that a brawl had broken out in his restaurant.

“We try and pick our clientele so that these things don’t happen,” Mr Delias said.

“But this happened and what can you do.”

Paramedics treated a 47-year-old man for cuts to his head after he was hit with a bottle, as well as a 49-year-old woman with a laceration to her arm and a 36-year-old man for a minor cut to his head.

A 19-year-old man also suffered a minor laceration to his nose and mouth.

Up to 20 police officers, including riot squad officers, were called to break up the fight at the New Canterbury Rd venue.

Police yesterday said they were still interviewing witnesses and trying to establish what caused the fight, but they added it was likely charges would be laid once the investigation was finalised.
