The accident happened between Cairo and the port city of Alexandria early Sunday, as the troops were returning home from their military base in northwestern Egypt for holidays, the official explained.
According to the security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the injured were transferred to a nearby hospital.
Bad driving and poor enforcement of traffic laws are the main reasons for the high frequency of road accidents in Egypt.
Egyptians, however, blame the government for its failure to deal with the poorly maintained roads and train lines.
According to a 2012 World Health Organization report, road accidents claim nearly 12,000 lives per year in the North African country with a population of about 90 million.
