Robert Kennedy Jr: Mary Kennedy was in agony for much of life

He told the New York Times: ”A lot of times I don’t know how she made it
through the day. She was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life.”

Mr Kennedy’s sister Kerry also told the paper about her sister-in-law’s
problems with depression, saying: ”She fought with every ounce of her
mission to overcome that horrible disease.

“It was not something that she asked for; it was something that she was dealt.”

Kerry Kennedy added that Mary had been to Alcoholics Anonymous and had been
sober for the past five months. Others said she had previously spoken of
suicide.

Mrs Kennedy is also said to have been upset at the end of her marriage and
worried about financial issues. She was being sued by American Express over
a bill.

The comments of Mr Kennedy and his sister came as Mrs Kennedy’s family
criticised media reports which highlighted Mrs Kennedy’s battles with
alcohol and prescription drugs and hinted at depression.

The family issued a statement which said: “While we would naturally prefer to
remain private at this very upsetting time, we feel compelled to make this
statement because the description of Mary carried by certain news
organisations since her passing is wholly inconsistent with the sister we
knew and the life she, in fact, lived.”

It has been reported that the two families are warring over Mrs Kennedy’s
funeral, which will take place on Saturday. It Is said that the families
will hold separate memorial services.

After her death, previous incidents highlighting Mrs Kennedy’s troubles were
revealed. The Bedford Journal News reported that in 2007 Mr Kennedy had
tried to drive his wife to see a psychologist but she had fled from the car.

It was also revealed that police officers were called to Mrs Kennedy’s home
two days before Mr Kennedy filed for divorce in May 2010.

The police report says she was “visibly intoxicated” and that she had “great
difficulty collecting her thoughts and articulating her reasons for
calling.”

Police also attended the house responding to a “domestic incident” on May 13
2010, a day after Mr Kennedy filed for divorce.

Days later, she was charged with driving while intoxicated. She was arrested
for another driving offence in August of that year and it was found she had
taken prescription drugs prior to driving.

A charge of driving while ability impaired by drugs was dismissed.

An autopsy on Thursday said that Mrs Kennedy died of asphyxia as a resut of
hanging.
