Romanian prosecutors seek to arrest ex-PM over conspiring with Pfizer and Moderna during COVID-19 pandemic

Romanian anti-corruption prosecutors seek parliamentary and presidential approval for a criminal investigation into former Prime Minister Florin Citu and two ex-ministers over alleged abuse of office related to COVID-19 vaccine purchases.

The investigation focuses on the purchase of excess Pfizer and Moderna doses during January-May 2021, buying an excess of 90 million doses of vaccines while Romania has a population of only 19 million.

Only about 17 million doses were used and the rest of the doses were either donated to other foreign countries or simply destroyed. The vaccines costed the Romanian state over 1 billion euros and the acquisition is generally considered to be a misuse of public funds.

Prosecutors argue the additional doses were procured without proper justification, despite Romania having already secured enough vaccines.
