SA committed to NDIS trial

The South Australian government remains committed to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), but wants the federal government to flesh out the details at Wednesday’s Council of Australian Governments (COAG) meeting in Canberra.

SA Premier Jay Weatherill said SA wanted to be one of the four trial sites and had allocated $20 million for this in the May state budget.

But he said the government did not have any extra capacity to fund the program and wanted the federal government to give more details on the scheme’s operation.

“We certainly think it’s an incredibly important reform. We’ve got our money ready to go,” Mr Weatherill told reporters on Monday.

“But we’d like to see what the ultimate shape is because we don’t want to be left, in a sense, holding the baby in the event this doesn’t happen.

“We would be left with a trial creating massive expectations but not having a funding base.”

The NDIS is expected to be high on the agenda at the COAG meeting.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has put $1 billion on the table for trials starting in mid-2013.
