‘Malvinas islands belong to Argentina’

In an interview with Sky News on Sunday 6 May, Castro said there was nothing wrong with the Olympics advertisement aired by Argentina TV because the Malvinas islands belong to Argentina and an Argentinean athlete can train on his own soil.

“Malvinas are Argentinean. I mean, the islands belong to Argentina, they are in our continental shelf so there’s nothing wrong with an athlete training there,” said Castro.

On Wednesday 2 May, several Argentinean TV stations aired an advertisement in which Argentinean national field hockey team’s captain Fernando Zylberberg exercises on the Malvinas islands. The advertisement ends with a slogan reading: “To compete on English soil, we train on Argentine soil”.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said the advertisement was a “sad stunt” and accused Argentina of politicizing the Olympic Games.

This comes as critics have raised concerns that the British government has already turned Olympic Games into a political game as it was revealed that the official website of the 2012 London Olympics removed information about countries’ capitals after Israel objected to listing Jerusalem (Al-Quds) as Palestine’s capital. Objections have also been raised to the London Olympics logo which spells the word Zion.
