Researchers at the University of Gothenburg claim that antioxidant vitamins do not protect from cancer, but have been observed to cause tumors to multiply and become aggressive.

In their study entitled “Antioxidants Accelerate Lung Cancer Progression in Mice”, the Swedish researchers stated that the amount of vitamins ingested have a direct correlation to the body’s ability to implement cancer-fighting mechanisms.

The researchers wrote: “We show that supplementing the diet with the antioxidants N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and vitamin E markedly increases tumor progression and reduces survival in mouse models of B-RAF– and K-RAS–induced lung cancer.”

Martin Bergo, co-author of the study warned: “You can walk around with an undiagnosed lung tumor for a long time. [Taking extra antioxidants] could speed up the growth of that tumor.”

Bergo commented : “It is possible that antioxidants will increase the growth of some of the cancers, and it is possible that it will prevent others.”

Further conclusions of the study: “NAC and vitamin E increase tumor cell proliferation by reducing ROS, DNA damage, and p53 expression in mouse and human lung tumor cells.

The Harvard School of Public Health (HCPH) explains that “antioxidants such as vitamin E are found in many foods and are also available as dietary supplements. They are meant to protect the body from disease by preventing cell damage caused by molecules known as free radicals.”

In 1994, the Alpha-Tocopherol Beta Carotene Cancer Prevention Study Group released a study claiming that asserted that beta-carotene was a factor in males developing lung cancer.

There are converse studies that show quite clearly that vitamin E prevents many diseases.
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic showed that vitamin E taken every day can prevent cancer disorders such as Cowden syndrome.
A study out of Ohio State University demonstrated that “in prostate cancer cells that one form of vitamin E inhibits the activation of an enzyme that is essential for cancer cell survival. The loss of the enzyme, called Akt, led to tumor cell death. The vitamin had no negative effect on normal cells.”

Vitamin E can be found in foods such as:

• Sunflower seeds
• Almonds
• Hazelnuts
• Peanut butter
• Spinach
• Kiwifruit
• Mango
• Tomato
