South Korea arrests nine Chinese sailors

“The Chinese sailors were seized while trying to escape. They are being taken to our base,” a coastguard spokesman in South Korea’s southwestern port of Mokpo said on Monday.

The spokesman claimed that the Chinese seamen had clashed with the coastguards and injured four South Korean officials when they tried to inspect the Chinese 227-ton boat on suspicion of illegal fishing.

The wounded people were shifted to a hospital in Mokpo by helicopter.

In April, a Chinese captain was given a jail term of 30 years for killing a South Korean coastguard officer during an operation to stop illegal fishing.

Nine other Chinese sailors also were sentenced to jail terms ranging from 18 months to five years.

South Korea says it seized 475 boats for illegal fishing in its waters in 2011 compared with 370 a year earlier.
