Special NSW guns, gang crackdown ends

Police have conducted a crackdown on gangs and guns at the weekend in western Sydney leading to hundred of arrests and charges following a spate of shootings.

Operation Spartan, established in January to tackle gun crime in Sydney’s west, was beefed up at the weekend and the action resulted in 424 arrests and 667 charges.

Police inspected 1400 clubs, hotels and tattoo parlours, and visited 608 people with links to gangs.

Twelve firearms were seized and 1014 new intelligence reports were compiled.

The full results of the weekend operation, which ended at midnight (AEST) on Monday, won’t be known until later in the morning, but Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli has hailed it as a success.

“This operation is all about dismantling and disrupting criminal activity, and we have made tremendous progress in achieving that goal,” he said in a statement.

“We’ve not only made a significant number of arrests, but also amassed huge amounts of new intelligence, which is in turn helping police to build an ever more detailed picture of criminals and the way they operate.”

Among those arrested was a 26-year-old alleged Rebels bikie gang associate, who breached bail over a Newcastle break-and-enter charge.

A 34-year-old alleged Nomads bikie associate was also arrested in Sydney’s northwest for breaching bail.

More than 60 shootings have taken place in Sydney’s west so far this year.
