There is a certain charm to terrible special effects in early sci-fi films, but when you are a world superpower failing to knock up a convincing Photoshop image in 2012 is a tad embarrassing.

This photograph of a man apparently ‘floating’ above a path on greenbelt land was reportedly produced by Chinese officials as part of a propaganda campaign to raise awareness about a landscaping project.

It was published on the Yuhang District government portal website on May 9 and is now triggering ridicule as it goes viral on the web.

According to news aggregator website chinaSMACK an apology was published on the same site a week later stating that the news piece featuring the photo of the floating man entitled ‘Completion and Transfer of the Green Landscapig Project of Nanhu Beach Park’ contained errors.

The apology read: ‘Due to unsuitable work processes, there were serious mistakes in the uploaded photograph.

‘With regards to the errors of our work, we deeply express our apologies.’

It is not the first time that China has been left a little red-faced in the Photoshop stakes.

Last year three Chinese officials looked a little out of place as they proudly showed off a newly laid road in Huili, south-west China.

As with the latest image the three middle-aged men appeared to be levitating several inches above the ground and were bigger than the rural surroundings.

Even the colours of their clothes were a different shade to the scenery and the edges of their bodies are blurred.

The image sparked a number of viral spoofs of the men appearing Photoshopped at different locations such as on the moon and wading through water with dinosaurs.

Spaced out: Even this picture of the three men inspecting the surface of the moon as an astronaut walks forward is more realistic than them standing on the road in China
