Sudan accepts Turkey mediation offer to end disputes with Ethiopia

Sudan accepted Turkey’s offer to mediate between Khartoum and Ethiopia, Anadolu reported.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi announced that Sudan accepted the Turkish government’s offer to solve the border dispute.

“During the visit of Sudan’s head of Sovereign Council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to Turkey last month, he accepted an initiative from the Turkish leadership to solve the border disputes with Ethiopia,” the minister said.

Sudan and Ethiopia have been at odds over border issues, energy sources, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) project.

Al-Mahdi also praised the United Nations Security Council’s statement calling on Sudan, Ethiopia, and Egypt to continue the African Union-sponsored talks on GERD according to a timeframe to reach a legally binding agreement on the operation and filling of the dam.

Al-Burhan paid a visit to Turkey in August and signed several economic agreements with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
