In the aftermath of conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer’s observation that the first person to shoot down a surveillance drone on U.S. soil will be a “folk hero,” the drone industry has committed itself to launching a propaganda blitz aimed at bombarding the public with positive messages about the technology.
“After issuing a statement denouncing Krauthammer’s remarks as “irresponsible” and “dangerous,” (Michael) Toscano said the AUVSI would go on the offensive against critics. While the strategy is still being shaped, Toscano made it sound like something straight out of a crisis-management textbook — or Orwell. The AUVSI wants to bombard the American public with positive images and messages about drones in an effort to reverse the growing perception of the aircraft as a threat to privacy and safety,” reports Salon.
Toscano, president of the Association of Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, is eager to keep the PR nice and simple. “You have to keep repeating the good words,” he said, adding that the word “drones” should also be dispensed with because of its negative connotations and replaced with the term “remotely piloted vehicles”.
Congress recently passed legislation paving the way for what the FAA predicts will be somewhere in the region of 30,000 drones in operation in US skies by 2020.
Privacy advocates have warned that the FAA has not acted to establish any safeguards whatsoever, and that congress is not holding the agency to account.

In addition, A recently uncovered Air Force document circumvents laws and clear the way for the Pentagon to use drones to monitor the activities of Americans.
Incidents involving the drones in recent months have hardly provided positive spin for the industry.
Last week a mystery object, thought to be a military or law enforcement drone, flying in controlled airspace over Denver almost caused a catastrophic mid air crash with a commercial jet.
Last summer, police in North Dakota used a Predator drone to spy on a family who refused to give back back three cows and their calves that wandered onto their 3,000-acre farm.

Um, it is irresponsible, dangerous and cowardly to operate remotely piloted vehicles and use them to spy on and shoot at people from wherever you are sitting and controlling this remotely piloted vehicle.

I would REALLY like to see a duck-blind made from IR reflective material and cammo would show up under FLIR at night. Even night vision can be defeated with the proper planning and a little bit of bait misdirection. I imagine that the 1st few individuals that get shot down will be relaced with squadrons in multi-layered coverage so that the BARCAP will be out of small arms range and will be specially outfitted with hi-res optics.
Until they deploy these things smartly, they will be flying targets for all to ping at.
The hell with shooting them down. The biggest weakness of a UAV is the fact there is no pilot on board and that it relies on remote control using radio waves. A device designed to focus a radio signal at them would be far more effective. It just has to disrupt their connection to the drone. Do that and it will come down pretty easy or just fly off in a direction those trying to control it do not want.
Another consideration people should be looking at is those who have purchased and own the airspace above their homes and neighborhoods, which more then a few have chosen to do over the years. That is their property under the law. So if one of these drones flies into their owned airspace what will the FAA do considering they are the ones who sold it to the person. Are they going to side with them or the operators of the drone. Because if they do that, it sets a bad precedent that no one can own or control airspace and negates the FAA.

This is just plain wrong. We need to bombard our representaitves with letters and phone calls until this is stopped. This is an evssion or privacy of the highest order If we have not committed any criminal act we should not have to worry about spy planes flying over our property taking pictures or anything else! This is America I seem to recall something important oh yes here it is Innocent until proven Guilty!!!!!! there is no reason to be flying drones over our homes if you want to partol the border with them thats one thing but flying them over residential and agricultural areas just looking for Something? Is just wrong! If TSA agents can Grope our Children should we allow other governemnt Agencies to fly over our back yards swimming pools etc and observe us all the while believeng we are in the privacy of our own homes? THIS IS JUST WRONG!!!!! I thought we wre living in AMERICA the Home of the FREE!

I don’t even know how to respond to this!!! I did my time in service to keep our country safe from those who would put Americans under this kind of scrutanty. Did I waste 8 years of my life? I raised my children to respect our country, it’s elected officials, our people in uniform, and out veterans. I’m trying to teach my grandchildren the same values. It seems that I should forget about doing this as the majority of our elected officials are not worth respecting. I am going to teach my grandchildren about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights so they know what we are in the process of loosing.
There is no propaganda that can spin this in a positive way!!!!!!
