At every red carpet event, women celebs are asked on camera “Who are you wearing?” with answers promoting Dior and Bulgari. At last week’s London premiere of James Cameron’s Titanic in 3D, Cameron’s wife Suzy Amis Cameron got the chance to tell interviewers that she donned a sustainable gown from Phophetik.
Long a fan of environmentally-friendly apparel, her Red Carpet Green Dress Competition for the Oscars has raised eyebrows and won best-dressed lists for the past three years.
For last week’s special 3D reissue of Titanic (starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) in time for the 100th anniversary of the ship’s fateful maiden voyage, Suzy wore Jeff Garner’s simple yet elegant strapless Prophetik design in hemp-silk, dyed teal-blue with Japanese Indigo grown in his Tennessee garden.
The hemp is naturally softened with baking soda for gentle draping and that flowing train.

For the 2012 Oscars, the Red Carpet Green Dress outfitted Missi Pyle, who starred in the big winner, The Artist, in a dress by Valentina Delfino of hand-pleated peace silk and organic chiffon, and accessories from Stella McCartney.
Zem Joaquin of Ecofabulous, Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute and the Natural Resources Defense Council support the contest. As Suzy Amis Cameron said:
Ultimately, a red carpet dress is usually worn once and involves a wasteful process. My hope is that the decision I’ve made today, on this red carpet, helps spur people to think just a little bit about their daily actions, choices and purchases.
Garner draws inspiration from dressmakers of the past who refashioned once-worn gowns to recreate new dresses. He believes that “having a social conscience will never go out of style.”
His organic label also uses materials like flax as well as greenspun fleece from recycled bottles. With his collections for women and men, available in shops from the US to the UK, and online, Prophetik looks to bring awareness to an industry that Garner says, “has not been concerned with the process as much as the results.”
Even if Avatar 2 doesn’t send green dresses to the red carpet until 2016, the Camerons continue to support sustainability from schools to the tar sands.
