‘Syria crisis has no military solution’

“The developments in Syria have no military solution and the crisis in the country cannot be resolved militarily,” the Iranian diplomat said in an interview with the Turkish daily Milliyet on Wednesday.

He expressed hope that the upcoming international conference on Syria, which is expected to be held in Geneva, would help end the turmoil in the country.

Bigdeli also stated that the Geneva meeting is an opportunity that contributes to resolving the crisis in Syria.

UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said on June 7 that the international conference on Syria might be held in July. The peace talks had originally been planned to be held in June.

Russia has repeatedly stressed the necessity of Iran’s presence in the upcoming Geneva talks. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on June 6 that Moscow would continue to push for Tehran’s participation in the event despite opposition from some Western states.

Lavrov also said in May that the issue of Iran “is key for us,” and that Iran “without question is one of the most important nations.”

The Iranian ambassador to Ankara further pointed out that Iran and Turkey were both concerned about the situation in Syria.
