Syria: The Liberation of Baba Amr – Syria: ANNA

ANNA-News reports back from the Syrian city of Homs. The remaining rebel positions are now scattered across several districts in isolation.

This documentation by ANNA-News is also interestingly in the sense that this footage proves, that the armed rebels – and not the regular Syrian army – stock up residential areas with unaimed artillery fire by self-built catapults. (Minute 02:55)

The translation of the transcript of the Russian-language video documentation by the team of ANNA-News follows right away, while you can find the Russian-language video documentary about the “liberation of Baba Amr” below the translation of the transcript.

In some places in relation to the respective parts of the transcription, a time code (video position) was inserted.

Syria: The Liberation of Baba Amr

(Translation of the Russian-language video from ANNA-News.)

Up to March 2012, in the district Baba Amr of the Syrian city of Homs, more than 3,000 armed fighters have gathered there.

The military operation, in order to liberate this strategically important part of the city, lasted 27 days. The military command had previously made a decision, that it would be sufficient for this mission not to send more than 1,000 well-trained soldiers and officers into battle.

The best ones were selected for it. Essentially, these were the officers of special units and a part of regular soldiers. The entrances to the city have been cut off by other army units. The military operation has cost the Syrian forces in the street fighting of Homs 50 dead and 200 injured, mainly by sniper fire, fire from mortars and rocket launchers.

More than 1,000 armed fighters were liquidated. The Syrian military has used the tactic of frequent diversionary attacks on previously occupied positions. Optical sighting devices were installed on the AK-47 of the assault troops, because of the proximity to the enemy, sniper rifles were hardly necessary.

Within the first 24 hours after the beginning of attacks of the assault troops, about 800 armed bandits were liquidated. During this first wave of attacks, hardly one of the soldiers of the Special Forces was able to waste his weapons magazine till the half.

During these attacks, and under the conditions of close combat and sniper battles, it was just as pointless to use heavy weapons.

If one drives through the suburbs of Homs, which were not bothered by the units of the terrorists, and then goes to the outskirts of the territory which were occupied by the armed rebels, the glaring difference is immediately apparent to everyone.

In the free parts of the city, the peaceful life goes on normally; the traders do not fear the bandits and even paint their shops demonstratively with the colors of the national flag of Syria (Minute 1:25).

The streets make an ordered, peaceful feeling. If one, however, comes to the areas next to the occupied – such as Bab al-Sebaa, on the border of the Old Town – one is able to see destroyed and burnt armored personnel carriers and cars (Minute 01:37), which were destroyed by the armed gangs, the destroyed roads and houses of yesterday’s battles, goods, left-behind on the streets by the fleeing bands, and even weapons; everywhere one can see the remnants of their positions for the ambush…

The remaining rebel gangs are now surrounded in the districts of Al Hameediye, Al Khaldeeye and in the old town. Due to the radial arrangement of the roads, the snipers of the terrorists are able to cover streets with a length of 800 – 1,500 meters with their weapons, depending on the caliber of its precision weapons.

For this reason, many roads are blocked by armored vehicles, one is able to see stretched, transverse panels of fabric (Minute 02:06), which block the view into the streets.

At this stage, the Special Forces have already liberated the Christian quarter Al Hameediye from the armed gangs for the most part. A major ammunition dump of the terrorists was taken (Minute 02:20). There were an enormous number of weapons there, Jordanian brands:

innumerable armor-piercing and explosive shells, caliber 12.7 mm, rifle and machine gun ammunition of the caliber of .308, which are often used in sniper rifles, dozens of rocket launchers, and shaped charges, mortar shells and so on.

Also two pickups with mounted thereon machine guns, recoilless, were captured by the Special Forces. Several months ago, the bandits in Homs had used two armored personnel in the fighting, which were previously captured from the army.

The most intense battles do usually happen there on Thursdays and Fridays. The rebels use mortars and self-built catapults (Minute 02:55), from which neighborhoods are regularly bombarded. An officer of the security forces and aerial reconnaissance demonstrated us, how these catapults are used.

Our film team was shown a workshop for the manufacture of explosives for these catapults and for the mining of buildings (Minute 03:02); where the terrorists have melted explosives in ordinary ovens. The whole, now disused factory of death, is only 10-15 meters from the present positions of the rebels away.

Of these, the city is constantly bombarded by self-built rockets; the targets are mainly the Christian and Alawite parts of the city. For example, during one of our visits in Homs, the terrorists have killed a schoolteacher during a test in one of the city schools by mortar fire.

Due to the short distances between the positions of the army and the rebels, especially ordinary firearms are used by both sides. Armored vehicles are used to block the roads, to protect the checkpoints and are also used for the evacuation of wounded.

The heaviest weapons, which are currently used in Homs, are heavy machine guns (12.7mm) (Minute 03:46), whose fire is often confused with artillery fire.

Among the rebel gangs, one frequently encounters adolescents (SN: kids, teenager); their grown-up relatives, who participate in the fight, have called them in.

We own, in addition, video footage of how terrorists use the following categories of weapons: recoilless guns, heavy machine guns, captured armored personnel with assembled cannons, Finnish sniper rifles of caliber .308.

If NATO will not begin to bomb Syria within the next few days, the military operation to the complete liberation of the Syrian city of Homs will be completed within 2-3 weeks successfully.
