Syrians prepare for parliamentary polls

More than 7,000 candidates, including 710 women, from the ruling party and 11 other new parties are competing for the 250 seats up for grabs in the parliament.

More than 14 million Syrians are eligible to vote in the elections under Syria’s new constitution which was approved in a referendum earlier this year.

The new constitution was part of a package of reforms introduced by President Bashar al-Assad.

According to Syrian officials, more than 900 candidates will compete for 29 seats in Damascus province. About 1,986,035 people are eligible to vote in the strategic province.

Syrian cities have already been decked with banners and posters of the candidates who have posted slogans under their photos revealing parts of their electoral programs.

Syrians hope the upcoming elections can bring peace to the country and pave the way for further reforms.
