THE young girl who died under suspicious circumstances on the Central Coast was in “grave danger” and known to DOCS a month before she died.

Little Tanilla Warrick-Deaves was subjected to a “very high risk” of abuse and neglect, a report by the Department of Community Services has found.

Tanilla’s mother, Donna Deaves, 27, and Ms Deaves’ partner Warren Ross, 28, faced losing Tanilla prior to the little girl’s death, with Bungree Aboriginal Intensive Family Based Services (IFBS) Wyong working with the family after a referral by DOCS.

The service provides an intensive home-based program for families in crisis and at risk of having their children removed.

A DOCS report has revealed neighbours regularly heard screams of “don’t hit us anymore” and complained directly to DOCS about the abuse. Neighbours also claimed to witness the parents using drugs, the report said.

Family Services Minister Pru Goward has admitted there was a “misjudgment” made by the department in dealing with Tanilla, 2, who died in Wyong Hospital on Saturday after suffering serious injuries at her Watanobbi home.

Tanilla’s mother and partner were interviewed at The Entrance police station on Saturday and allowed to leave. It has emerged the family had been reported to DOCS 30 times since 2004.

Ms Goward has ordered an immediate investigation into Tanilla’s care. She told 2GB broadcaster and The Daily Telegraph columnist Ray Hadley the child died in “terrible circumstances”.

“This family was given intensive support but it was clearly a misjudgment and we have to get to the bottom of it,” she said.
