Target Policy Results in Call for Boycott

American Family Association objects to Target’s transgender policy and organized a boycott of the department store.

Over 1,000,000 people have signed a petition to boycott Target after Target released a statement saying “we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”

The boycott pledge was organized by the American Family Association (AFA), a conservative, anti-LGBT extremist, non-profit group. The AFA argues that Target’s policy “endangers women and children by allowing men to frequent women’s facilities.” The group also holds that Target should have a single occupancy unisex bathroom in addition to separate gender-specific restrooms.

AFA President Tim Wildmon said in a statement, “This means a man can simply say he ‘feels like a woman today’ and enter the women’s restroom, even if young girls or women are already there. Target’s policy is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims. And with Target publicly boasting that men can enter women’s bathrooms, where do you think those predators are going to go?”

Target spokesperson Molly Synder wrote in an e-mail that hundreds of Target stores have single stall/family restrooms for guests who may be more comfortable with that option. In reference to the petition she said, “As a company that firmly stands behind what it means to offer our team an inclusive place to work – and our guests an inclusive place to shop – we continue to believe that this is the right thing for Target.”
