Killed … Andrew Heffernan.

A driver whose taxi was seized after a fatal hit-and-run in north-west Sydney will be interviewed by investigators this week, police say.

The 39-year-old driver’s taxi was being examined by police after Andrew Heffernan, 23, was found with serious injuries on Old Castle Hill Road in Castle Hill about 1am on Saturday.

He died after being taken to Westmead Hospital.

Inspector David Lagats of The Hills Local Area Command said the taxi driver was expected to be interviewed this week, but not today. He has spoken to police but has yet to provide a formal statement.

Inspector Lagats denied media reports that police suspect Mr Heffernan may have been hit by a vehicle after a disagreement over a taxi fare.

“That’s not our line at the moment. We still haven’t worked out how the accident happened at the moment … so if it’s in the media, it has to come from a source that is outside the police,” he said this morning.

“If someone has that information, we would love them to come forward and contact people with that if they are a witness.”

The ABC said it understood “witnesses have told police Mr Heffernan had been talking to the driver and was hanging on to the taxi as it suddenly accelerated”.

The car had no major visible damage, the ABC reported.

Police said in a statement there were “strong links” between the incident and the seized taxi.

Kim Heffernan, Mr Heffernan’s father, said yesterday his family “just want to know what happened, we just want closure”.

“It’s like a parent’s worst nightmare.”

Mr Heffernan said his son’s career in real estate was on the rise and “he was in the prime of his life”. He had been drinking with friends at the nearby Hillside Tavern.

Anyone who saw the incident or has any information was urged to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
