A fisherman who died after being swept into the sea by a large wave off the NSW Illawarra coast was 19, police say.
The teenager was rock fishing off the eastern point of Windang Island, south of Wollongong, when he was knocked off his feet about 2.30pm yesterday, police said.
The wave swept him into the water and carried him away from the shore.
Other rock fishermen tried to throw him a life buoy but were unable to reach him, police said.
A lifesaver dived into the water and pulled the fisherman to the surface but the teen was unable to be revived and he died.
Police are continuing their investigations and will prepare a report for the coroner.
