China
has at least 100 million people suffering from mental illness, according to
health officials. In 2009, it overtook heart disease and cancer as the
biggest burden on the Chinese health system, according to the World Health
Organisation, affecting some seven per cent of the population. The
definition is broad however, and a large proportion suffer from relatively
minor conditions such as anxiety or depression.
