David Grimes, a post-doctoral physicist from Oxford University, has figured out a way to debunk conspiracy theories using an age old method – math.
Essentially, a conspiracy can only stay secret for so long, and using mathematical equations of probability, it is easy to determine the validity of a conspiracy theory based on the length of its “life” and the probability of its demise.
Grimes developed an equation to express how long alleged conspiracies could “survive” before being revealed because “sooner or later one of the conspirators will blow its cover”.
This conspiracy buster equation uses 3 foundational factors:
• How many conspirators involved
• Amount of time passed since the conspiracy was introduced
• Inherent probability that the conspiracy will fail
Using the Poisson distribution , a statistical tool used to measure probability of an event occurring within a specific amount of time, Grimes created his formula.
Per the experiment, Grimes tested 4 popular conspiracies using the equation; these included:
• Alleged faking of the Moon landing
• Climate change is not real
• Vaccines cause autism
• Drug corporations suppressed cancer cures
Should these 4 conspiracy theories prove correct, the equation showed that they would have been revealed by now. And yet, they are still very much under the darkness of conspiracy.
According to Grimes, the Moon landing “hoax” should have been revealed 3.7 years after it was first introduced; the climate change “hoax” should have been exposed in 3.7 to years since its introduction to the public; vaccine causing autism should have unraveled 3.2 to years since its appearance; and the cancer cure cover-up should have been exposed 3.2 years ago.
Using this predictive model, Grimes was able to accurately calculate that the National Security Agency (NSA) PRISM program would be revealed 6 years from its initial implementation. Strikingly, it was 6 years from the NSA’s execution of these surveillance programs that Edward Snowden revealed them to the world.
Speaking of the Moon landing conspiracy, this operation involved more than 400,000 NASA employees. With this many people involved, Grimes equation said this hoax should have been revealed after 3.7 years; however the conspiracy is still going.
This points to the fact that with so many people involved in a “hoax” it would have been improbable for it to be kept secret by the 400,000 plus people who would have been involved. Today this conspiracy is more than 50 years old, yet still commands an estimated 251 conspirators to be true.
Statistically, this is highly improbable.
The purveying concept of conspiracy theories have found a home on the internet and an audience of people from all walks of life. Recently rapper B.O.B. tweeted incessantly about the flat earth theory with such fervor that astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson jumped in on the conversation to dispel these erroneous beliefs.
While the rapper was deterred from his scientifically unsound theories, B.O.B. wrote a song accusing Tyson of “taking money from globalist Jewish freemasons” and encouraging his audience to research David Irving, the infamous holocaust denier.
With the internet becoming a breeding ground fertile with conspiracy theories and social media helping to spread the virus, people in general have become uber-vulnerable to the power of groupthink fueled by confirmation bias .
