Tons of explosives seized in Afghanistan

The explosives had been hidden in a truck loaded with potatoes on the city’s outskirts.

“If the explosives had been used, it could have caused large scale bloodshed,” Shafiqullah Tahiri, a spokesman for the Afghan intelligence service said.

According Tahriri, three of the militants are Pakistani nationals, while the other two are Afghans.

Officials say the militants confessed that they were planning to use the explosives in a massive attack on crowded areas in Kabul.

The explosives were reportedly brought from Pakistan into Afghanistan.

Last Sunday, a wave of deadly attacks on Kabul’s diplomatic enclave by Taliban militants left tens dead.

Despite the presence of thousands of US-led forces in Afghanistan, insecurity continues to rise across the Asian country.

Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices (IED) are by far the most lethal weapons, the Taliban militants use against the Afghan forces, foreign troops, and civilians.
